Disney Farewell To The Metaverse

Apr 12, 2023|

As part of a restructuring plan, Disney recently axed the small division that developed the metaverse strategy.

Just last year, Disney also described the Metaverse as "the frontier of a new generation of great stories" and was working to "create a whole new model for audiences to experience and engage with our stories," with the goal of integrating the technology into its Disneyland parks. New interactive attractions as well as Disney-branded consumer products.

Today, Disney appears to have abandoned that goal—at least until the cloud universe technology matures enough to offer a viable, commercialized, money-making opportunity, and the public shows some interest in using it.

Disney isn't the only one retreating from the Metaverse: Microsoft recently shut down its Industrial Metaverse core division, which was founded only last October.

Still confident in the Metaverse is Meta, whose name is Metaverse. Nick Clegg, the company's head of global affairs, promised that in the future, Meta's metaverse experience will be more friendly. When asked how Meta could reap the rewards of its massive investment in the Metaverse, Clegg pinned his hopes on advertising and commercials.
