The third generation ODN

In addition to pre-connection, another major innovation of ODN2 is the use of barcodes or QR codes for each fiber and port, which can be easily entered into an intelligent database to create a digital optical distribution network. This "Digital Quick ODN" uses the unique identities of ODN passive components to create intelligent management features such as automatic storage of fiber location information, automatic identification of fiber connections, fiber alignment information, and visual guidance for field operations.

The emergence of pre-connected and digitally labeled optical fibers, optical splitters, and optical fiber processing trays has greatly reduced operators' deployment time and costs, but has not solved the problem of operating costs. Today, the third-generation ODN (ODN3) is being developed, aiming to solve the ODN operation cost problem by introducing active, automatic monitoring and intelligent technologies.

Using some kind of optical monitoring system (e.g. based on reflections, etc.), the intelligent management system will automatically identify and locate faults down to specific fibers and ports within a single network element. This information is then provided to handheld devices in the hands of network operations centers and field technicians. The benefit of being able to "see through" a 1xN splitter in an ODN is huge. The location of fiber breaks can be down to the fiber-by-fiber level, and unused ports and intact ports can be identified individually prior to service requests. Also, service uptime/downtime can be monitored at the level of individual ONU/ONT.
