Optical Network Technology

Optical network technology is a higher level of application of optical fiber communication technology. From the SDH self-healing ring technology and Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology at the beginning to the point-to-point wavelength division multiplexing system, optical cross connect (OXC) and optical add drop multiplexing (OADM) technologies were used to form an optical transmission network (OTN) with wavelength channels as the unit. Then, on the basis of 0TN, the automatic wavelength switching (ASON) technology is introduced to form an automatic switched optical network (ASTN). At this time, an all optical network (AOTN) is really formed. ASON is different from the traditional 0TN. The traditional 0TN only has a transmission plane and a management plane, while ASON introduces a control plane. Because of the introduction of the control plane, ASON is highly intelligent and realizes optical cross or exchange. ASON/ASTN represents the development direction of next generation network (NGN) transmission platform.
A network designed for the burst of packet traffic and the requirements of statistical multiplexing transmission, called packet transmission network (PTN), has been widely used in MAN (or local network). It takes packet service as the core, but it can provide multi service support, with lower overall use cost. At the same time, it inherits the traditional advantages of optical transmission, including high availability and reliability, efficient bandwidth management mechanism and traffic engineering
It features convenient OAM and network management, scalability, high security, etc. Its networking architecture is divided into core layer, convergence layer and access layer.
